Do you guys remember that crazy shitshow that was Bombay Dreams? I loved every minute of it, but perhaps no minute more than the three devoted to “Shakalaka Baby,” which recreated the Bollywood staple of a “wet number” (that is, dancing through fountains, or in other words, EXACTLY AS AWESOME AS YOU HOPED A “WET NUMBER” WOULD BE) live on stage!
I remember at least one critic at the time claiming that Don Black had hit a new low with the lyric “Shakalaka Baby” to which I can only say he must not have been all that familiar with the Don Black songbook.
Regardless, I went looking for a video of the number on YouTube and found something better - apparently some Indian popstar recorded the song (only this time all in an Indian language I am going to guess is Hindi) and made an AWESOME (but sadly dry) video.
BROADWAY, EVERYONE!
One of my greatest regrets is missing BOMBAY DREAMS.
